Tent-Talk Neuroaromatics:Naturally High
The Key May Already Be Inside You.
We spend so much time looking outside ourselves for what we hope will make us feel better — our phones, other people, achievements, possessions, distractions.
And when that doesn't work, we often find other ways to numb what we don't want to feel.
We may get high, without actually healing.
We often look outside ourselves for a quick fix, but real grounding usually comes from turning inward.
That is the idea behind Naturally High.
Scent Can Open a Door
Essential oils and scent can reach parts of us that words and conscious thinking sometimes cannot.
Deep emotional patterns can operate outside our conscious awareness, shaped by our experiences, our nervous system and even biological processes influenced by our environment and previous generations.
We cannot always think our way into these deeper layers.
But scent can give us access.
Our sense of smell has unusually close connections with brain regions involved in emotion, memory and our physiological response to the world around us.
This is why a scent can suddenly bring back a memory or change how a moment feels, before your conscious mind has even figured out why.
The mind doesn't always understand.
But something deeper inside us may already know.
Why Do We Keep Repeating the Same Patterns?
Our minds love routine. We tend to loop through the same thoughts and reactions simply because they’re familiar. The good news? Our brains are adaptable. Because smell connects directly to the emotional center of the brain, a distinct aroma can act as an anchor. When you pair a scent with a moment of real presence or joy, you're training your brain to build a new, positive path back to that feeling.
Creating an Olfactory Anchor
An olfactory anchor is a scent that becomes associated with a particular feeling, memory or inner state:
When we combine scent with emotion and repeat the experience, the brain begins to form an association.
You smell an essential oil. Scent molecules activate olfactory receptors, sending signals into brain regions closely connected with emotion, memory and the nervous system.
At the same time, you intentionally connect with something that feels good like a memory, image, visualization, person, place, piece of music or desired state. By repeatedly pairing the two, the brain becomes familiar with the connection.
Over time, the scent itself will become an olfactory anchor that helps you reconnect with that positive state.
Instead of continually fighting old patterns, we are working with the brain's natural ability to learn and change (neuroplasticity).
Scent & Your Feel-Good Chemistry
Something feels good when the right brain chemicals are released.
We all know that rush of motivation (dopamine), or the deep comfort of feeling connected (oxytocin), the feeling of happiness and well-being (serotonin), or the calming, inhibiting effect of GABA.
Scent doesn't simply make the brain “release a feel-good chemical.”
It's more fascinating than that.
Olfactory signals interact with brain regions involved in emotion, memory, autonomic function and hormonal regulation.
When we inhale an essential oil, the scent travels through the olfactory system to the limbic system and hypothalamus, where it can influence our nervous system and hormonal responses.
Research is exploring how aromatic compounds may influence stress responses and neurotransmitter systems including GABA, serotonin and dopamine.

Your Feel-Good Chemicals
DOPAMINE
Reward, Motivation, Anticipation
SEROTONIN
Mood, Stability, Wellbeing
OXYTOCIN
Connection, Trust, Bonding
GABA
Calm, Slowing Down, Relaxation
GABA is one of the brain's major calming neurotransmitters.
Think of it this way: GABA is the key, and the GABA receptor is the lock.
Interestingly, some essential-oil constituents like for ex. linalool, found prominently in lavender, are being studied for their effects on GABA-related signaling. Benzodiazepines such as Xanax or Valium also act through the GABA-A receptor system. While they work much more gently, researchers are still studying whether they bind to the exact same site on the receptor.
To be clear, essential oils aren't a substitute for medical treatment or therapy, but they are a gentle, sensory tool you can use every day.
Which Essential Oils?
Different aromas may support different emotional experiences — and your personal response to a scent matters. Here are some examples:
Uplifting energy and motivation:
Bergamot, Wild Orange, Grapefruit, Rosemary, Peppermint
Calm and emotional balance:
Lavender, Bergamot, Frankincense, Sweet Orange, Roman Chamomile
Connection and emotional openness:
Rose, Neroli, Jasmine, Ylang Ylang, Sandalwood
Vitality and physical wellbeing:
Peppermint, Eucalyptus, Black Pepper, Ginger, Clove
Try feeling, what the scent does in you.
Create Your Own Olfactory Anchor
Try this simple practice: Choose a scent you love. Close your eyes, and bring to mind a memory or feeling that brings you real warmth, a favorite place, a loved one, or just a quiet moment of peace. Take a slow breath in with the oil, letting yourself actually feel that comfort in your body. Over time, that scent becomes a gentle shortcut back to center whenever you need it.
Repeat the practice regularly. With repetition, your brain can strengthen the association between the aroma and the emotional state you are practicing.
Eventually, that familiar scent may become your personal reminder:
I know this place.
I know this feeling.
I know the way back.

The Neuroaromatics™ Approach
Neuroaromatics™ brings together the science of essential oils, the nervous system, and the brain.
Because the brain operates largely automatically, it tends to rely on familiar neural pathways, following the same patterns repeatedly, whether they support our wellbeing or keep us stuck in unhelpful habits.
Through the powerful connection between scent and the limbic system, essential oils can become olfactory anchors when intentionally paired with a positive emotion, memory, visualization, or desired state. With regular practice, these scent associations can help reinforce new, more supportive neural pathways by harnessing the brain's remarkable ability to adapt and change—a process known as neuroplasticity.
Rather than trying to fight unwanted thoughts or emotions, the Neuroaromatics™ Approach helps create new sensory associations that gently support healthier emotional patterns and greater wellbeing.

Your Ritual
1. Set an Intention
Before entering the sauna, take a quiet moment. Close your eyes, take a deep breath, and ask yourself:
What am I ready to release today?
2. Create the Aroma
Add 3–5 drops of Reset to your sauna water and stir gently before each pour.
3. Breathe & Release
As the fragrant steam rises, inhale slowly and deeply. Let each breath invite clarity, presence, and a sense of coming home to yourself.
4. Receive the Stillness
After your sauna, sit quietly for a few moments. Drink water, breathe deeply, and notice how you feel.
Sometimes the greatest reset happens in silence.
May every sauna become a journey back to yourself.
